A Note
From Rory
Dear Reader,
All
I can say is, "What a week it has been!" And I mean that in a
good way, and I mean it from a position of frustration as well.
Let's start with the "good stuff," and as you'll
see - the
part of being frustrated really is okay and good too (at least because
the bad stuff is over).
I am really excited at how many of you have already embraced our
new access to Dr. Cerulli. We have been receiving some really
great questions and I am looking forward to what will be the first of
many calls in this series. Ask
Dr. Cerulli your own question.
And speaking of Dr. Cerulli - this week has been one of my
favorites so far in the ADHD Strategy Series. Dr. Cerulli spoke about
medications - one of the most frequently questioned topics in all of
ADHD. And then we heard from Carrie Wilkerson, Mom who has
just
about enough energy to light up NYC.
What about the frustration? Well, we'll get to that in this
week's "featured article." You see, I fell into a bit of funk
the
past three weeks - and I think today was the day that I finally broke
free from the agony I was subjecting myself to...

5 Steps
To Reclaiming A Little Sanity
By, Dr. Rory Stern
Over the course of what I will call three weeks, yours truly has lost a
little bit of sanity. I have been increasingly frustrated,
abnormally desperate and downright bored. In some ways, I
fell
"victim" to overwhelm and couldn't get myself out of a paper bag.
Sidebar:
I use the word "victim" very lightly here because of how
heavily loaded that word can be for some.
To be perfectly honest with you, I lost focus of what was important and
I have spent more time doing things that are counter-productive than
those things which are productive and fun. I made life boring
and
hard - simply because I had nothing better to do. (Insert
chuckle). I really did do this to myself.
But this morning, after a rocky start (and I really mean landslide,
rocky start), I pulled myself together and found myself quickly
climbing back to where I am most comfortable:
In the driver's seat
of my life.
Because I got so down - and I struggled to get out - I decided that
I needed to share with you a few simple steps of how I got "unstuck"
from the boring, mundane routine of life. What follows are a
few
simple steps to try and shake things up. It worked for me,
and I know it
can work for YOU.
The steps might need to be a little different, but I promise you - you
can do this.
Step 1
- Announce Your Intentions To The World
I am serious here guys. Stand up tall, and make a decree to
yourself, to your spouse, partner, or to your family. Let
them
know that today is the day for change. I myself made this
announcement out loud to the world. I announced my intentions
to
a higher power (yes, I do believe in god).
Step
2 - I Shook Things Up
Instead of doing the same old routine that I have become so accustomed
to, I knew that I need to take
action
to bring about change. Believe me when I tell you, that this
morning I never thought that one small action would set forth a bunch
of different events that have since occurred to me and for me.
(But more on that later).
Step
3 - Do Something For You
Find an activity that works for you. Do something that you
know in the past has brought you great joy. And I want this to be
something you have given up, or not focused on lately. It's
not
enough to just sit down and watch a movie. Get up - get
physical
- and get some energy
flowing in throughout your body.
Me? I went for a walk. I put the kids in a double
stroller, and I stretched my legs for about 45 minutes. In
doing
so, my creative juices started flowing. You see, I get very
creative when I am out walking. I used to do it all the time.
But enough about that... You can read more here
if you are interested.
Step
4 - Keep The Flow Going
Once your energy is restored (and maybe it will take more than just
a walk), get involved in some other activities that you have let go.
For me - that was focusing on abundance rather than scarcity.
On my walk, I remembered that there is an abundance of
opportunity in the world. I remembered that opportunity does
not
simply appear - and that I need to create opportunity.
I forgot that.
Step 5
- Share With The World
This might seem a little obvious. And it might be the "norm"
in self-help circles. But it is only the norm because it
makes a
difference. This morning I broke out of my self-induced
isolation
and let people know how I was feeling. And on top of that, I
let
them know of the action I took to get out of my own way.
It's one thing to share with the world that you are down (and I
urge you to do that). Hey - you can even contact me and let
me
know what has you down. But
- it's truly something else to connect with other people and let them
know of your breakthroughs.
The goal - Support. Surround yourself with people who will
help pick you up.
**Bonus**
Step 6 - Celebrate The Victories
If this process works for you, and I am confident it can and will
make a difference, take a moment to revel in your new space.
I
promise that if you give this a chance, it can make a difference for
you. And taking a moment to acknowledge the change and really
welcome it back can do HUGE things.

I wanted you all to be the first to know that I have a few

Who Is Dr. Rory Stern?
It's time I changed this section up. Enough about the
"professional face" of Rory Stern...
Dr. Stern is a father, husband, son, "former therapist, ADHD coach,
and information provider. He works from home while caring for
his
two young children (3 y/o daughter Dylan and 9 month old son Gavin).
His blog, The Truth
Behind ADHD, is really an expression of a message he once
delivered to children and parents while working as a psychotherapist.
Having left the workforce to care for my two children, I still feel
the burning desire to share my message with others. I am
passionate about supporting children and their parents, and making sure
that the right information gets to the people who need it the most.
In terms of ADHD, I became active in the community because
too
many of my patients and their families did not have enough information.
And often times, the information they were getting was as
absent
as the support and understanding they received from colleagues,
friends, and professionals.
Dr. Stern's message is just as much about education and advocacy,
as it is about understanding ADHD. I do what I do because I
want
to change all that. It is my intent to make sure that parents
and
children all over the world realize that while ADHD is real, it is also
a label and a name to characterize certain traits and qualities that
can do so much good in a time when there is so much bad.
I simply don't want to see another child simply be misunderstood, mislabeled,
misdirected, and mistreated.
