A Note From Rory

Dear Reader,

We made it back from Florida - even if it was a day earlier than we had anticipated.  Hurricane Fay really made a mess of travel arrangements, despite it really ever hitting and making a mess of Florida.  Our original flight home was canceled a day early, so we decided to leave sooner than later.  The visit with the family was incredible, but we just were ready to come home.

This weekend we are heading up to Southern New Hampshire for some camping with my wife's family, and then it's back to work - back to school!

Lots happening right now.  Be sure to check out the News & Announcements.  There is a really great opportunity to attend a virtual conference, and I am really excited to be doing another Live "Ask Dr. Cerulli" Teleseminar in early September.

The ADHD Strategy Series

If you have questions about ADHD and your child, this was a can't miss event.  Every week, for 6 1/2 weeks, leading ADHD experts and child advocates gathered to share information and strategies that you could apply immediately.  This was the freshest, most applicable information...  There was no hype, and no frills...

Today I am pleased to announce that you can now own the entire series for a very small investment.  The information alone is invaluable, and the strategies come awfully fast.

There is NO hard sell or lengthy sales page to read through.  That's not me.  Hopefully there is just enough information to tell you what you get...

Back To School Tips: Myths That
Somehow Keep On Going

By, Dr. Rory Stern

Today's article is inspired by a young woman I met last week!  One thing I love about children, particularly children with ADHD, is that they typically speak their mind and they know just what is going on.

I wish more kids and adults were like this...  But that's just me.

Back To School:

While meeting this outstanding young woman, we got to talking about school, expectations (both our own and our parent's), as well as so many mother topics related to life and coming into oneself.  What I loved most about this conversation was the "authenticity." While I'm sure there was some apprehension about talking to a new adult, I loved how comfortable she felt speaking what was on her mind.

While most people are focusing on back to school this time of year, I wanted to share some reflections from this conversation....

Reflections and lessons from a senior in high school thinking
about what to do in the world:
  1. Grades Don't Really Matter (The Way We Think They Do)
  2. The Illusion (And Sometimes Deception) Of School
  3. Taking More Chances (& Learning From Them)
  4. Focusing On What Counts (Not What Should Count)
Let's take a closer look at each one of these:

Grades Don't Really Matter
 (The Way We Think)

For many parents, and children, there is a great legend around doing well in school.  I was raised with this ethic, and so were many of my peers.  The thought is that if you do well in school, you will get into a good college, and eventually land a good job.

But this just is NOT a reality anymore.

Good grades do NOT translate to or guarantee success in life.

What To Do Instead:

Help your child focus more on learning - understanding concepts.  Many of us believe or inspire our children to land prestigious jobs.  But let me tell you something - there are plumbers and mechanics who make more money an hour, than some doctors.

Help your child follow their heart and their passion.

The Illusion Of School

For the record:  I am NOT bashing schools or teachers in anyway.  They are of CRITICAL importance for shaping the youth of America.

What I am suggesting however is shifting what we focus on, and how we focus on it.  As a student, I always struggled with being told "We are preparing you for the real world."

Now being in the real world, the lessons of turning things in on time, and not granting extensions are a total reversal of everything I was taught.  It is important to respect deadlines and to learn about managing time, but the real world is a lot more flexible than we lead our children to believe.

Everything is about accomplishment, balance, and being done in moderation.  Inspire children to do their best...  Inspire children to be passionate in what they do...  But most of all, help them understand that what works in school...might just NOT work in the real world.

Taking More Chances &
Learning From Them

When things come naturally or when we focus on grades (and not the lessons), we risk missing opportunity. As a student who achieved high grades, I was always challenging myself to do better and to be at the top of my class.  But because I did well, and rarely ever failed or struggled, I never learned to take chances.

I was always told to learn from my mistakes, but never understood what that truly meant.

Let children struggle a little, and then when you help them, give them the opportunity to learn from their mistakes.  Don't come down hard on them...  Instead, connect with them on a personal level.  Show them how to learn from their mistakes.

Let them know it is okay to struggle.  Arm them with the opportunity to take chances, and learn from their mistakes.

Focus On What Really Counts

Maybe it's just me, but so many children who come in to my office are in trouble for not getting good grades, or for not following rules.  Then there are the ones who can't keep their rooms clean.

I can't make decisions for you.  And I won't pretend to tell you how to live your life.

Instead, I will try and inspire you to focus on what really counts, and not what should count.  For example, don't do something just because that's the way it is "supposed" to be.  Instead, do what really happens.

I always remember being taught that "you should not fidget in an interview," but how often is the interviewer fidgeting with a pen?  Tapping on a desk?  Rocking his or her foot back and forth?

And what about eye contact?  We are taught to make eye contact, but is it possible that sometimes we go overboard?

Maybe someone doesn't maintain good eye contact because they are scared...  Or maybe it's because they don't feel good about themselves.

As a child and parent coach, I want to help my clients see what counts and what makes a difference.  I won't focus on what should be...  and what ought to be...  Let's help one another focus on what is and what will become!

Who Is Dr. Rory Stern?

Dr. Stern is a father, husband, son, "former therapist", ADHD coach, and information provider.  He is in private practice outside of Boston, and spends time caring for his two young children (3 y/o daughter Dylan and 1 y/o son Gavin).  His blog, The Truth Behind ADHD, is really an expression of a message he once delivered to children and parents while working as a psychotherapist.

Having left the workforce to care for my two children, I still feel the burning desire to share my message with others.  I am passionate about supporting children and their parents, and making sure that the right information gets to the people who need it the most.  In terms of ADHD, I became active in the community because too many of my patients and their families did not have enough information.  And often times, the information they were getting was as absent as the support and understanding they received from colleagues, friends, and professionals.

Dr. Stern's message is just as much about education and advocacy, as it is about understanding ADHD.  I do what I do because I want to change all that.  It is my intent to make sure that parents and children all over the world realize that while ADHD is real, it is also a label and a name to characterize certain traits and qualities that can do so much good in a time when there is so much bad.

"I don't want to see another child simply be misunderstood, mislabeled, misdirected, and mistreated," says Dr. Stern.

Professional Bits:

Dr. Stern earned his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology.  While studying, he also completed a Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching.  He is a member of the American Psychological Association and currently serves on the National Board of Directors for the Attention Deficit Disorder Association (ADDA).
