A Note From Rory

Dear Reader,

And we are off and running.  Last week didn't really count, here anyway, for going to back to school.  My wife did work Monday, and her students came in Tuesday to Thursday...  But it still felt like summer.  I guess the 4-day weekend really pushed that.  I hope you enjoyed it.  We were supposed to go camping, but had to cancel our plans at the last minute.

Fortunately however, we were still able to enjoy a great, relaxing weekend together as a family.  The kids got to run around and play, and I was able to squeeze in some work.  I will share those details with you soon...  But in the meantime, I am feeling incredibly refreshed and looking forward to the days, weeks, and months ahead.

Today's "featured article" was going to be my introduction, but I decided to make it a little longer.  Please check out the News & Events section.  September is going to be a busy month, and I want you to know about things to come...

I am most excited to share that Dr. Cerulli and I have been welcomed back to the studios over at AM 590 in Boston.  We will be live and on the air, September 13th at 10 AM.  Watch this space and the blog for details...

Creating A Schedule That
Works For Us All

By, Dr. Rory Stern

This morning I sat down to write about how different things are with my wife now back to work.  As I continue to take care of my children, we are back to a fairly predictable routine...  Sure, the day varies, but at least I have a time frame to work with...and I have a general idea of what to expect.  Yes...every day is completely different, but there is some continuity.

This is on my mind right now as children head back to school, and for my own personal reflection of feeling like I did not get everything accomplished, over the summer, that I had hoped to.  Over the summer... There was just too much free time.  There were too many excuses and variables to say, "I'll get to it later..."  And then later never came.

Comfort In A Schedule

New parents are told to put their babies on a schedule...  Schools run on a schedule...  We schedule meetings and appointments...  But why?

Schedules benefit everyone.  Putting an infant on a schedule is just as much about the baby as it is the parents.  Let's look at the main benefits of a schedule:
  • Continuity
  • Reliability
  • Parameters
  • Boundaries
  • Expectations
When I think of schedules...I think about knowing what to expect.  Sure there are many other benefits to setting a schedule...  But for me, that's the main benefit.  I know what is coming...  I know when to expect it...  And, I also understand that it might change.

Schedules And ADHD

People with ADHD, both adults and children, can greatly benefit from a schedule.  It provides structure and can help give people focus and attention.  No...it doesn't solve anything or everything...  No it's NOT a magical cure.  But it's a piece of the puzzle.  Think of it like setting rules.

If you tell a child, don't forget your homework...  Will they forget?  Will it get done?  Are you willing to take that chance?

But if you put it down on paper or schedule that specific time, we are making our intentions known.  We are setting aside time.

Routines come in all shapes and sizes....  The best advice I can give you is to make sure you do what works for you and your family.  Some children are visual and can benefit from a calendar that is written down...  Perhaps your children need an organizer...

Setting A Schedule

When setting a schedule, think about what you want to accomplish.  What are the goals of setting a schedule?  What do you want to get done?  How do you imagine it will help?

But most of all, be flexible.  Yes....be flexible.  Setting a schedule and sticking to it is important.  But you also need to be prepared for that schedule shifts (and it will).

When I am talking about schedules...  I am thinking about setting up habits...  Routines...  Lifestyle changes...

Maybe you need to schedule the morning so that waking up your child is less of a hassle.  Or maybe you need to schedule after school hours to make sure homework gets done.

Who Is Dr. Rory Stern?

Dr. Stern is a father, husband, son, "former therapist", ADHD coach, and information provider.  He is in private practice outside of Boston, and spends time caring for his two young children (3 y/o daughter Dylan and 1 y/o son Gavin).  His blog, The Truth Behind ADHD, is really an expression of a message he once delivered to children and parents while working as a psychotherapist.

Having left the workforce to care for my two children, I still feel the burning desire to share my message with others.  I am passionate about supporting children and their parents, and making sure that the right information gets to the people who need it the most.  In terms of ADHD, I became active in the community because too many of my patients and their families did not have enough information.  And often times, the information they were getting was as absent as the support and understanding they received from colleagues, friends, and professionals.

Dr. Stern's message is just as much about education and advocacy, as it is about understanding ADHD.  I do what I do because I want to change all that.  It is my intent to make sure that parents and children all over the world realize that while ADHD is real, it is also a label and a name to characterize certain traits and qualities that can do so much good in a time when there is so much bad.

"I don't want to see another child simply be misunderstood, mislabeled, misdirected, and mistreated," says Dr. Stern.

Professional Bits:

Dr. Stern earned his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology.  While studying, he also completed a Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching.  He is a member of the American Psychological Association and currently serves on the National Board of Directors for the Attention Deficit Disorder Association (ADDA).
