A Note
From Rory:
Dear Reader,
What an exciting week it has been already --- on so many different
levels. Our 1-year-old son, Gavin, has really taken to
climbing on everything he can. First it was just the sofa
table (about 3 feet high). He would more or less just grab
the top and try to pull himself up. Now his climbing has
progressed to greater heights... No pun intended.
ADHD Awareness Week has been a blast so far. I have been a
guest on 2 of Tara McGillicuddy's Blog Talk Radio shows. Both
of them are available for your listening pleasure...
I am also really excited to announce some upcoming programming that I
will either apart of or sponsoring myself. I am going to
expand a little bit on this below in the "News & Announcements"
section.
Oh yeah... I almost forgot! Dr. Cerulli and I have been
rescheduled to be guests in studio at AM 590 on September 27th, at 9 AM
EST. More info to folllow...

Article:
ADHD Is
Still Greatly Misunderstood
By, Dr. Rory Stern
I'm actually
having a really tough time starting this article today. Not
because I don't know what to say... But rather because I am almost
"speechless" about today's topic.
ADHD is still greatly misunderstood by so many people...
- The public...
- The professionals...
- The media...
- Our friends...
- Our family...
Despite all the recent advancements in research, and our greater
understanding of the brain, there are still people who doubt the
existence of ADHD. There really are people who believe it does not exist.
This was actually the topic of Tuesday afternoon's
Blog Talk
Radio show with Tara McGillicuddy, director of ADDclasses.com.
Tara wanted to know, "...of all the questions coming in, what stands
out for you...?" And while there have been some really
profound questions, it still amazes me to see the volume of people who
question ADHD as a legitimate condition.
There's a part of me that gets it... But I still can't agree
or get behind this idea that it doesn't exist. I've just seen
too many people... too many families whose lives have been affected
(for good and bad).
What I find even more interesting is the perspective shared from a
conversation I had this weekend. I have long been interested
in speaking with a medical doctor who is actively involved in the
"gifted community." It's a widely held belief that ADHD is greatly misdiagnosied and overdiagnosed.
There's the idea that this diagnosis is merely "the flavor of
the week..."
Even I'm Not Immune...
Now, I have to admit to some degree that even I find myself somewhat
confused by all the names, labels, and diagnoses. Even as a
professionl in the ADD / ADHD community, I sometimes wonder about the
true existence or root of this condition.
BUT - I do not discount nor would I suggest that it just isn't real...
ADHD is a condition that affects a lot of people. And it's a
condition that affects people differently. Perhaps that is what is so
controversial about this condition. We just can't see it...
We can't objectively identify what is going on within the
complexity of the brain.
And why should we
think that we can understand the brain?
I posed the following question on the radio show Tueday:
"Do we honestly
think that with 6 billion + people on the plant,
that some of us will have different brains?"
Is it that hard to
believe? Or fathom as a possibility?
Bottom Line?
I have never once sat in a room with someone and thought - "Wow, they
totally have ADHD!" And I certainly don't see someone who is
broken. It's never happened... It doesn't happen...
That's just not how I work. Instead, I see differences!
And that's what we are talking about.
The brain of someone with ADHD is different. Just like the
brain of someone who is gifted... It's different.
Don't let differences get in the way of what you can accomplish, or in
what you can inspire a child to accomplish.

Who Is
Dr. Rory Stern?

Dr.
Stern is a father, husband, son, "former therapist", ADHD coach, and
information provider. He is in private practice outside of
Boston, and spends time caring for his two young children (3 y/o
daughter Dylan and 1 y/o son Gavin). His blog, The Truth
Behind ADHD, is really an expression of a message he once
delivered to children and parents while working as a psychotherapist.
Having
left the workforce to care for my two children, I still feel the
burning desire to share my message with others. I am
passionate
about supporting children and their parents, and making sure that the
right information gets to the people who need it the most. In
terms of ADHD, I became active in the community because too many of my
patients and their families did not have enough information.
And
often times, the information they were getting was as absent as the
support and understanding they received from colleagues, friends, and
professionals.
Dr. Stern's message is just as much about
education and advocacy, as it is about understanding ADHD. I
do
what I do because I want to change all that. It is my intent
to
make sure that parents and children all over the world realize that
while ADHD is real, it is also a label and a name to characterize
certain traits and qualities that can do so much good in a time when
there is so much bad.
"I don't want to see another child simply be misunderstood, mislabeled,
misdirected, and mistreated," says Dr. Stern.
Professional Bits:
Dr.
Stern earned his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the
Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology. While
studying,
he also completed a Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching.
He is a member of the American Psychological Association and
currently serves on the National Board of Directors for the Attention
Deficit Disorder Association (ADDA).
