A
Note
From Rory:
Dear {!firstname_fix},
This has been such an incredible week... It all started off
Saturday morning doing a radio appearance with Dr. Cerulli http://www.askdrcerulli.com.
Things moved along as I got
prepared for the big announcement on Tuesday afternoon, followed by a
teleclass on Tuesday evening. Wow! Let me tell you
- I am really touched by the strong response we have received for our
announcement.
Many of you have already taken action and signed up for the priority
notification list for the f.r.e.e teleseminar on October 26th, 2008 (9
PM EST). If you are not on this list yet, I really want you
to jump on board. This coming Tuesday I will reveal the
details of how you can
win a complimentary membership pass to this new resource.
Check it out: http://www.adhdfamilyonline.com
We are in the homestretch for this week, and I am gearing up for what
promises to be an exciting weekend. Starting tomorrow
afternoon, I will have the great honor (seriously!!) to sit down with
my dear friend and mentor, Carrie Wilkerson. Some of you
might remember her from the ADHD Strategy Series we did back in May and
June of this year.
Have a great weekend everyone! Keep taking action, and as
always, let me know how we can help.

Article:
Being
Different Is Both An Honor And
An Unfair Responsibility
By, Dr. Rory Stern
This past Tuesday night, I was
the invited guest speaker at ADDClasses(dot)com. The talk I
gave
was called: Parenting
Essentials: ADHD Or Not - "I Am About To Ask You To Throw
ADHD Out The Window."
The whole point of the talk was really to look at understanding differences.
If I had to really summarize the presentation, it would look
like this:
"We are all different, each and every one of
us. Some have it
harder than others, and the challenge lies within finding the delicate
balance of who we are and how we overcome our greatest challenges."
One of the questions I received, at the end of the night, was perfect.
For me, it underlined the entire reason I was giving the
talk. (And no - I didn't plan for it to happen this way).
The question: "Dr.
Stern, do you have ADHD? And if not, how do you think you can
help someone who does?"
This is a fair question...and a very good question.
Those of you who know me, or have gotten to know me over the last
several weeks and months, probably know how I would have answered
this...
I thanked the listener for her question. And I let her know
that while I have said I do not have ADHD - I fully recognize,
understand, and embrace the differences I have in life. We
know that there are many things that look an awful lot like ADHD...
And we know that there are a lot of different circumstances
in life (and reactions to life) that can make someone exhibit the
characteristics of ADHD.
I'll be the first to raise my hand and shout out loud that I am
different... I am! I just understand the context of
my differences as being a "gifted" individual...another "condition"
professionals don't really understand.
***The Key: Understanding your differences so they work for
you or your child is what we need to focus on! Labels mean nothing without
context and understanding.
An Honor &
An Unfair Responsibility
Before taking that question, I shared the following list of how being
different means living a life that can be (and often is) a double-edged
sword:
- Passion Vs. Boredom
- Intelligence Vs. Results
- Strengths Vs. Weaknesses
- Positive Vs. Negative
- Disorder Vs. Differences
- Outside Vs. Inside
Why
am I talking about all of these? It's quite
simple... What do you focus on, and what are you teaching
your children to focus on?
Let's see if we can pick this discussion up next week and get a little
more in-depth.

Who
Is
Dr. Rory Stern?

Dr.
Stern is a father, husband, son, "former therapist", ADHD coach, and
information provider. He is in private practice outside of
Boston, and spends time caring for his two young children (3 y/o
daughter Dylan and 1 y/o son Gavin). His blog, The Truth
Behind ADHD,
is really an expression of a message he once
delivered to children and parents while working as a psychotherapist.
Having
left the workforce to care for my two children, I still feel the
burning desire to share my message with others. I am
passionate
about supporting children and their parents, and making sure that the
right information gets to the people who need it the most. In
terms of ADHD, I became active in the community because too many of my
patients and their families did not have enough information.
And
often times, the information they were getting was as absent as the
support and understanding they received from colleagues, friends, and
professionals.
Dr. Stern's
message is just as much about
education and advocacy, as it is about understanding ADHD. I
do
what I do because I want to change all that. It is my intent
to
make sure that parents and children all over the world realize that
while ADHD is real, it is also a label and a name to characterize
certain traits and qualities that can do so much good in a time when
there is so much bad.
"I don't want to
see another child simply be misunderstood,
mislabeled,
misdirected, and mistreated," says Dr. Stern.
Professional
Bits:
Dr.
Stern earned his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the
Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology. While
studying,
he also completed a Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching.
He is a member of the American Psychological Association and
currently serves on the National Board of Directors for the Attention
Deficit Disorder Association (ADDA).
